Being prepared for a storm
9/19/2022 (Permalink)
Here are some tips on what you can do to be prepared:
- Learn about your local community’s emergency warning system for severe
- Discuss thunderstorm safety and lightning safety with all members of your household.
- Pick a safe place in your home for household members to gather during a thunderstorm. This should be away from windows, skylights and glass doors that could be broken by strong winds or hail.
- Make a list of items to bring inside in the event of a severe thunderstorm.
- Make trees and shrubbery more wind resistant by keeping them trimmed and removing damaged branches.
- Protect your animals by ensuring that any outside buildings that house them are protected in the same way as your home.
- Consult your local fire department if you are considering installing lightning rods.
Different kinds of lighting
5/26/2022 (Permalink)
Lightning creates shock waves. Lightning striking across a cloud produces shock waves that we know as thunder, but it can also cause these on the ground. These shock waves are powerful enough to explode cinder blocks and shatter windows, so it is wise to inspect the foundation of your home if lightning struck nearby.
Lightning can damage electronics. When it travels through a home’s wiring system, lightning can transfer its charge throughout the electrical network of the home—causing significant damage to anything plugged in. A surge protector is a good precautionary measure for protection.
Lightning can start fires. Because lightning typically strikes buildings or structures, it can often cause fires. Not only do its high temperatures have the potential for igniting a home on impact, but it can also cause severe wiring damage within the walls of the home. If your house has been struck, the fire department can perform tests to ensure the wiring is not a fire risk.
If your home or business experiences a lightning fire related damage, call SERVPRO of East Hamilton Fairfield.
When water leaks
12/17/2021 (Permalink)
When water leaks the first thing you need to do is shut off the source so that the water stops. It’s important to ensure that the water stops in response to turning off the valve. Example the supply line to the sink has burst. You turn off the valve to stop the water, if the water keeps coming out you will need to look for the shut off valve (The main).
It is not uncommon for old shut off valves to go bad to the point that when you try shutting them off, it doesn't work. If this is the case in your property, you will need to locate the main water valve. This valve is usually located at the water meter for city water. If you have a well, it is typically located by your pressure tank.
In the event of a water disaster in your home, you want to limit the amount of water leaking. By locating the source of the leak and shutting off your main water valve, you are well on your way to recovery.

During a storm
10/11/2021 (Permalink)
Make sure all lawn furniture, gardening tools, sporting equipment and other outdoor items are stored away if a storm is heading your way.
High winds during a heavy storm can potentially pick up these items and send them flying through a window or far away from your home.
Putting away loose outdoor items in this situation can protect your house (and your neighbors’ houses) from unnecessary damage.
Trim the trees
Take time to examine the trees in your yard or surrounding your house.
Storms will often snap large tree branches, which can damage your home’s siding, smash your car or even topple power lines and cause outages.
If the tree has a loose connection with a big branch, consider sawing it off. It might reduce some shade in the yard, but can potentially protect your home.

Water under ceramic tile
10/11/2021 (Permalink)
Tile can withstand small quantities of water but if your home has been flooded and you are thinking of leaving the affected tile untouched, there are a few important things you should know. Water that has found its way under ceramic tile can cause mold growth. If that mold is not taken care of it can become very dangerous. Mold spores can lead to health effects and will eventually compromise the structure of the tile itself.

Power outages
9/17/2021 (Permalink)
No matter the storm event, there is always a risk of power outages in your power network. Power outages may disrupt communications, water, and transportation. They may also create obstacles to business as usual, such as preventing you from being able to use gas stations, ATMs, banks, and other services as normal. At the most critical, power outages can cause food spoilage, water contamination, and disrupt medical devices, posing possible health effects to communities.
Review these steps to see how you can protect yourself and your household in the event of a power outage:
- Keep freezers and refrigerators closed until power is back on.
- Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.
- Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.
- Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
- Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power dependent medical devices.
- If safe, go to an alternative location for heat and cooling.
- Check on neighbors.

Ice dams
12/18/2020 (Permalink)
Ice dams can be damaging to your roof, eaves, and even cause water to back up under shingles and in to your home. This can happen when snow melts from the warmer top portion of your roof and runs towards the colder eave, where it freezes. Heavy snow can worsen this effect, as it will hold the warmer air under the snow layer and allow the ice to accumulate. How can you prevent this problem?
1) Keep your gutters clean
2) Make sure heat sources to the attic are blocked and that there is ventilation allowing cold air to circulate in to the attic space
3) Insulate the space between the living space and attic
4) Clean heavy snow off of the roof with a roof rake
5) Install electric heat cable in a "z" pattern along your roof line
Always know, that should you have a problem, SERVPRO of East Ha,Liston Fairfield is ready to help!
Roof tips

How To Maintain Your Roof?
If you own a business, you may be worried about roof damage to your commercial property. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to help keep the roof of your business in working order.
1. Keeping Gutters Clean
One important step for roof maintenance is to keep your gutters clean. This can help prevent blockages that can lead to flooding and pooling water on your roof. It's best to check your gutters after storms to ensure that no debris has been washed into them.
2. Monitor the Roof’s Condition
It's also important to monitor the roof's condition on a regular basis. Look for any wind damage, loose shingles or cracked tiles. These are all things that should be taken care of as quickly as possible.
3. Regular Inspections
A regular inspection by a professional can help prevent roof damage in the long-term. These professionals can look over your roof for any signs of damage you may have missed. If found, repairs can be conducted to get the roof back into working order.
4. Trim Back Trees
Another step you can take for roof maintenance is to trim back any tree branches that could fall onto the roof. This can help prevent damage in the event a storm causes brakes in the tree limbs.
5. Conducting Repairs Quickly
In the event you do find damages or areas needing repair on your businesses roof, then a professional restoration team may be able to help. In the event of extreme damage, they may even be able to perform a full roof rebuild.
Following these steps can help reduce the possibility of roof damage to your business. Remember to keep your gutters clean to prevent flooding, inspect for cracks in shingles or roof tiles, trim back any tree branches that could fall into your business, and conduct any repairs needed as quickly as possible. If you do find the roof has storm damage, then a professional may be able to help.
Stopping the source
10/10/2020 (Permalink)
Identify the Source
Water damage can come from three general sources:
- Category I is clean, potable (drinkable) water. This is water comes from an overflowing sink, bathtub, broken water supply line or a fixture shut-off valve. This is the preferred source should water damage occur, since it poses minimal risk of contamination or respiratory danger.
- Category II water is sometimes called "gray" water. It is not drinkable, but also not full of sewage. Category II water can include dishwasher run-off or washing-machine run-off. These sources contain soap and/or food contaminants but not raw sewage.
- Category III water, sometimes called "black" water, is highly contaminated. It contains bacteria or chemicals harmful to touch, consume or inhale. Category III water must be removed by a professional with proper immunizations and personal protective equipment. Category III water can include any type of sewer back-up, water that has run across open ground before entering the structure, or anything related to a chemical spill.
Stop the Source
If the water is Category I or II, your next step is stopping the source. (If Category III, wait for a professional.) Be sure you know where your main shut-off valve is for your home's water supply and test it yearly to ensure proper function. If your leak is coming from an appliance or fixture with a shut-off valve, turn this valve off instead of the water to the entire building.
If a large amount of sewage is coming out of a drain line continuously there is a blockage in the sewer line or the municipal sewer system is malfunctioning in your entire neighborhood. Immediately call your city's wastewater department and report the issue. They need to respond immediately to prevent the flow of sewage.

Storm damage
10/1/2020 (Permalink)
Is It Covered by Insurance?
Many types of storm damage are covered by homeowner’s insurance. Most policies cover damage by lightning, fire, wind, and hail. Some also cover water damage restoration and replacement costs due to flooding and other storm concerns, but water damage is less commonly covered than other types of storm damage.
It is important to check with your insurance provider to determine what all costs are covered if a storm leads to home damage. By understanding what types of damage your insurance policy covers, you can properly prepare financially in case a storm does damage your home.
Regardless, a prompt response to the damage is often necessary to cut costs and restore as much of your home as possible, reducing the need for more expensive and time-consuming replacements.

Act before a flood
4/12/2019 (Permalink)
When a flood hits your home, there is not much time to collect yourself, let alone start to mitigate damages. However, if you can manage to get things in motion quickly, you may be able to reduce expenses and repair times associated with flood damage to your residence or business. Here are a few things to try to act on after a damage.
Get Things Higher Up Before a flash flood - You may want to spend some time in the hours before it hits moving your belongings to higher ground. Floods don't often reach higher than a few feet in the home, and you should be able to keep most of your belongings safe by taking them to higher floors or placing them on counter-tops and secure tables. Be careful not to place too much trust in a table, however, as it may buckle or overturn as floodwaters overtake it.

Purpose of a flood cut
10/10/2018 (Permalink)
After a storm rages it is likely that your home will experience a bit of flooding. When this happens, you will probably hear the water professionals from SERVPRO you hire talk about making a flood cut. A flood cut is a mark that is made 12 inches above the spot where the water damage stops. Specialists tear out everything below the flood cut to stop the spread of contamination and prevent mold growth. Here are some common questions about this process.
1. What Circumstances Require a Flood Cut?
Any time there is damage that cannot be dried with a fan, professionals are probably going to use a flood cut to be on the safe side. Insulation cannot be dried, so if there is wet insulation, the wall has to be cut out and the insulation removed. If the water is contaminated by storm-related debris or sewage, the wall must be discarded. If tests show any harmful microbes, the affected area must go.
2. Why Does the Flood Cut Have To Be a Foot Above the Damage?
Water damage from flooding does not like to stay politely in its place. What technicians can see with the naked eye may only be the beginning of the story. Placing the flood cut 12 inches above the visible water damage ensures that everything affected is remediated.
3. Is There Any Way To Save the Wall?
If the water damage is minimal and no insulation is affected, it is possible that quick removal of water and fast drying techniques can allow the wall to be salvaged. The water in question must also be clean. If it is contaminated at all, the wall has to be replaced.

Extracting Water From Pipe Break
The next step after inspection is water cleanup, which is a major mitigation strategy after a supply line break or pipe break. This involves removing water from all the rooms in a flooded home using vacuums and pumps. The extent of the damage caused by water in home determines the type of equipment the restoration company will use. The water should be removed as soon as possible to avoid bacterial and mold growth. The water from a supply line break or pipe break should be contained and extracted immediately to prevent further damage in a flooded home.
It is advisable to remove all wet materials like toys, clothing, pillows, throw rugs, and carpets from the affected area before water cleanup. Our professionals can expedite drying by removing wet surfaces on floors, ceiling, and walls after water cleanup. Unsalvageable dry walls or insulations such as baseboards should be removed to accelerate drying. The other method that can be used to accelerate drying in a water cleanup process involves opening cabinet doors and drawers.

Water damage is no match for SERVPRO of East Hamilton Fairfield restoration professionals.
Flooding can happen anywhere and if you live in Florida, you know even one of our heavy afternoon thunderstorms can ensure flooding can happen "any time" as well.
It's a scary thought to think that your home could be under water in a moments notice.
So we thought we would share a few tips that can help you stay flood free.
- Water flow - How does water flow around your house? It's important that it flows away from the structure. If it is noted that this is not the case, you may want to call an irrigation specialist to see if it is possible to correct get it fixed without spending a fortune.
- Water valves - Modify them. So many times in flooding cases we see sewage backup and overflow. That is the LAST thing you want to be dealing with, so it may be worth it to look at installing a back-flow valve.
- Lastly, in the event that you believe flooding is about to occur, move as many items as you can away from the rising water (electronics especially). Then give us a call, and we will be out there ASAP to help!

Quick response is important
9/25/2018 (Permalink)
When a flood hits your home, there is not much time to collect yourself, let alone start to mitigate damages. However, if you can manage to get things in motion quickly, you may be able to reduce expenses and repair times associated with flood damage to your residence. When a flood hits, try your best to follow these points of advice to minimize property damage and headache in the ensuing days and weeks.
Get Things Higher Up Before the Storm - You may want to spend some time in the hours before it hits moving your belongings to higher ground. Floods don't often reach higher than a few feet in the home, and you should be able to keep most of your belongings safe by taking them to higher floors or placing them on counter-tops and secure tables. Be careful not to place too much trust in a table table, however, as it may buckle or overturn as floodwaters overtake it.

When a strong thunderstorm passes through any area, the potential for storm damage can range from very minimal to leaving behind significant amounts of damage in homes and anything that gets in its path. In fact, it is not uncommon for a storm to take off the roof of a home in seconds or to flood the house with water. In some situations, the homeowner may not be able to do anything to prepare for the devastation that it does, especially when there is little warning in advance. This is also why so many weather stations are often focused on telling the people in their immediate and surrounding areas what is going on before the storm hits the areas.
Removing all of the water from a home after a storm is not as simple as some people think. In fact, these jobs should only be done by professionals who have the expertise to complete the job by using the most innovative equipment in the industry. So, for those of you who have storm damage that has affected your home, you can contact at SERVPRO of East Hamilton Fairfield for assistance at 513-858-1071 today.

Storm damage

Flood damage is a water event that requires professional help. A bucket and mop or shop vacuum are not up to the challenge. The sheer amount of water quickly overwhelms any do it yourself attempt. The experienced technicians from SERVPRO employ powerful, industrial strength pumps and extractors to evacuate the water fast. Speed is critical because of the progressive nature of water damage.
Many structures, items, and surfaces can emerge nearly good as new if water does not have the chance to soak into and begin the process of disintegration. Although building materials like finished wood, concrete or cinder block may be able to shed water without much change, drywall, insulation, ceiling tiles, carpeting, and other porous components risk swelling, crumbling, and delamination if soaked for any period of time.
SERVPRO of East Hamilton Fairfield employees learn dozens of targeted strategies to quickly and successfully remove water from you place of business or home. Once the obvious water is gone, the crew uses high-efficiency fans and dehumidifiers to complete the job, drawing residual moisture out of contents and structure.
